BACON INDUSTRY.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOME MARKET WANTED Some suggestions for the improvement of the pig industry were submitted to the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union at Wellington the other day by Mr. K. W. Gorringe, Government Instructor in Swine Husbandry. He advocated a general endeavour to breed the right of pig for bacon purposes—viz., -Tamworth, Berkshire, or Yorkshire cross, or Large White, Berkshire or Yorkshire cross. He further recommended a system of grading for export whereby the best type would be allowed to be shipped. The Meat Board, he said, would no doubt deal with this matter later. The sterilisation of skim milk was absolutely essential in combating the increase of tuberculosis in pigs. The president (Mr. W. J. Polson) said the Meat Board could give all the assistance required by the bacon industry. The scheme to control the export of bacon was before its time. Many large companies had been formed to deal with the bacon grown in this country, which possibly consumed 90 per cent, of the pigs reared. The soundest thing they could do would be to ask the Meat Board to find out for them the class of pig which was required on the English market, and what price was likely to be obtained. New Zealand pig-breeders could then decide whether it would pay them to breed for the Home market. A motion to this affect was carried.
