The Otama branch of the Union wrote asking that before a poll was taken to raise the loan, that a definite scheme be placed before the ratepayers.—Letter held over till next meeting. COUNTY STREET LIGHTING. The secretary of the Southland Power Board wrote stating that the Board was being urged by the residents in several small townships (not being borough or Power Board areas) to provide suitable street fighting, and the Board was anxious that something should be done in the matter. Before anything definite could be done, however, the question as to who was responsible to the Board for the cost of installation, the annual charge for current, and for the maintenance of the system must be fixed, as also must the question as to who was to control the lights. The Board, having carefully considered the matter, and having conferred with its solicitors regarding the position, had resolved to ask the respective county councils to take the matter up on behalf of the residents in the County townships. The Board would furnish an estimate of the cost of the work in each caes, and would state what the annual running costs would be, and it would agree to carry out the work of installing at ten per cent on the actual cost to the Board. It was decided to ask the Power Board for full particulars. A letter from Peter Gilfedder on behalf of a Resident of Richmond Grove asking that improvements be made to the bridge at the intersection of Margaret street and East Road, and that the west end of Charlotte street be made fit for traffic, was referred to the member for the riding and the Engineer. It was decided to advise the Council’s solicitors to proceed with the proclamation in connection with the Caroline-Josephville Road. WAIHOPAI SCENIC RESERVE. The Town Clerk of the Borough of Invercargill wrote stating that negotiations with Thomson’s Trustees had resulted in an agreement whereby the Borough Council would purchase approximately 48 acres of land on the west side of the Waihopai Scenic Reserve, and 5.6 acres on the east, side of the river. It was intended to have the' land so acquired vested in the Corporation as a scenic reserve, and steps would be taken to have it proclaimed a sanctuary for birds. Under these circumstances, the Council applied to have the whole of the area exempted from rates. —The letter was held over in the meantime on the motion of Cr Fraser, who said the County had not received a fair deal from The Council. OTHER BUSINESS. It was decided to advise the Morton Mains branch of the Farmers’ Union that the work referred to in their letter, viz., Morton Mains, Gorge Road, and Kamahi roads, and the corner and road leading to the stock loading bank was at present in hand. A largely signed petition of ratepayers of Ferndale, Knowsley Park and Waireikiki wrote asking that a portion of the road known as the Waireikiki-Knowsley ParkGorge Road be formed and the worst portions gravelled, so as to enable them to secure a rural mail delivery service.—Member for riding and Engineer to visit the locality.
