VAGRANT VERSE

THE ADVENTURER. (Written for the Southland Times.) I must take to the road alone — The West is calling me— Where gaunt trees, by the wind’s will blown. Look from the hill-slopes to the sea. Where in the night, with star points sown. Skies link with waves in mystery. Out to the West where shadows ride And high adventure hidden waits, I will go out with the far-flung tide And war alone with the blinded Fates. I must take to the road alone— What home is here for me?— The mean small things have smaller grow* And I have a longing to be free: The call ia to me, in flesh and bone— The links are gone that used to be. Craven I’m not, nor am I brave— I must away or weep HU I may come to thia lonely grave And lose my pain in a dreamless sleep. SHAUN O’SULLIVAN. InvaurpU, October 31. 1924.
