BLUFF BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held on Tuesday, there being present the Mayor (Mr J. S. A McDougall), and Councillors W. Hinchey, W. Dixon, W. H. Johnston, T. Doyle, A. E. Budd, J. Cameron, D. McKenzie, James Walker. An apology was received from Councillor M, E. Wiig. It was moved by Councillor Hinchey) and seconded by Cr Doyle that the foreman be asked to attend io a blocked drain at Mr Lyon’s residence in Henderson street. J. Harrison made application for permission to erect a new pound on his property, and this was granted, subject to, the same being constructed to the satisfaction of the Council, and at his own expense. On the motion of Councillors Cameron and Doyle, it was decided to obtain the opinion of the Borough solicitor regarding the refusal of the P. and T. Department to pay fees for water-flushed closets installed in the Post Office building. It was decided to inform Mrs Janet Cooper that the Council recognised no responsibility in the matter of refunding sanitary fees paid by her for a residence on Burrows’ estate. Mr J. G. Imlay’s letter in connection with the railway siding agreements was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and a report. The arrangements for a farewell visit to Bluff of their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Jellicoe were left in the hands of his Worship the Mayor. Cr Doyle moved that the survey of land purchased for a water catchment area be proceeded with, and deeds for the land be procured. The motion was not seconded, and lapsed. A motion proposed by- Cr. Walker, and secorided by Cr. Hinchey that the matter of the survey of a water catchment area be held over in the meantime, was then carried. On the motion of Crs. Budd and Dixon, it was decided that the letter received from the Public Trust regarding the Council’s funds be referred to the Finance Committee for consideration. It was also resolved that the Bluff Cricket Club be granted the use of the Recreation Reserve during the cricket season, and be charged the full amount of expense incurred by the removal and replacement of turf on the concrete pitches. In compliance with a request from the Bluff School Committee, it was decided to top-dress the footpath in front of the school with finer material. It was decided on the motion of Crs. Hinchey and Dixon to erect a notice board near Stirling Point, warning motorists not to park cars at the turning place. The Bluff Tennis Club was to be advised that the Council was unable to grant their request for a water-flushed lavatory, and that it was of opinion that the ordinary sealed pan service would prove adequate for. requirements. Sundry applications for permission to instal additional electric lights and carry out alterations to buildings were granted, ‘.nd the foreman’s report was read and received. It was decided to furnish the Shaw, Savill and Albion Coy. with a copy of the Southland Power Board’s letter in regard to charges for repairs effected at their stores, and to request payment of the account for same at an early date. The recommendation of the Efecflric. Light Committee: “That the pole line to the Southland Cool Stores be proceeded with, so that a supply of current would be available to the stores by the end of October,” was adopted. On the motion of Crs Hinchey and Doyle, it was decided to call applications for a Borough electrician, as recommended by the Elettric Light Committee. It was also decided to accept Messrs Henderson and Brown’s quotation for the supply of a man to carry out repairs to the electrical installation in the meantime.

It was left to the Mayor to arrange for a whistle to be blown as an alarm in case of a fire in the Borough. • It that the secretary of the Invercargill Stock Exchange be advised that the Council has debentures for sale, and that the usual brokerage would be allowed. Cr. Walker reported on the progress made by the West End Committee in connection with the convenience on the Recreation reserve, and the matter was left to the Committee for further consideration.

Accounts amounting to £250 14/6 were passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned.
