HEDGEHOPE. GENERAL NOTES. (From Our Correspondent., After weeks of dry weather, followed by high winds, rain set in on Friday last, and was much welcomed. In fact the district could have done with a little more, but it was enough to fill the tanks, residents being thankful for that small relief. The local school teachers, Misses Nico 11, Macgregor and Robbie have resumed duties after their fortnight’s vacation spent in various parts of the South Island. With the advent of two new families in the district, the Lower Hedgehope School now claims six new pupils, which, from the teachers’ point of view is more than satisfactory. Mr M. Condon’s bungalow, which he has lately bought, was this week bodily shifted per tractor a distance of 14 miles, not a hitch occurring, showing a tractor can be used for other than farm work. WINTON. BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) At the fortnightly meeting of the Winton Borough Council there were present:—His Worship the Mayer (J. A. Broom, Esq.), Crs. Blyth, Darnill, Hamilton, McKay, and Wilson. Cr. Darnill moved that the ashman be asked to tip the ashes and rubbish on the reserve on Moore’s Road and that Mr Ryan be notified that the Council requires the use of this section.—Seconded by Cr. Wilson and carried.

Mrs Janet McArthur applied for a connection with the borough drain opposite her property in East Winton.—Granted on the motion of Crs. Darnill and McKay. Cr. Wilson moved that Mr G. Goodsir’s application for a box crossing into Section 19, Block IX., be granted on the usual terms.—Seconded by Cr. Darnill and carried. Mr J. Walsh wrote asking that Mr W. Hamilton, as Trustee for the proposed Awarua Woollen Mills, be granted an option over the lease of section 6, block IV., East Winton, until the first day of December next. —Cr. McKay moved that the request be granted, and that the rental be fixed at £7 10/- per annum.—Seconded by Cr. Wilson and carried.—The Clerk was directed to notify the present tenants that this reserve may be required for a woollen mill site on December 1 next.

Cr. Wilson moved that electricity be supplied to Mr T. J. Gullick.—Seconded by Cr. Darnill and carried. Cr. Wilson moved that the offer of the Southland Farmers’ Co-op. Association of £l2 for the grazing rights of the recreation reserve for one year be accepted.—Seconded by Cr. Hamilton and carried. The Southland Electric Power Board stated that it was prepared to enter into negotiations for the purchase of the Winton reticulation and asked that a deputation from the Council wait on the Board’s Committee.—The Clerk was directed to acknowledge receipt of the letter and advise that the Board will be communicated with at a later date.

Cr. Wilson stated he had consulted Mr Jones, of Turnbull & Jones, regarding the reticulation of the town. —Cr. Blyth moved that Mr Jones be requested to visit Winton, inspect the reticulation, and give the Council an idea of its value.—Seconded by Cr. Wilson and carried. Mr R. Sands wrote asking that his house in Church Street be connected with the borough drain.—lt was decided to inspect the drain in question. Mr R. C. Stenhouse’s application for a box crossing at the entrance to his. residence in Prince Street was granted. In accordance with the recommendation of the Inspector of Health, Councillor Wilson moved: That eating-hcuse licenses be granted to Messrs T. J. Banks, W. Scott, R. Jamieson and Mrs W. Gill.—Seconded by Councillor Blyth and carried. Mr E. F. Roberts’s letter regarding the street improvement works was received.— Councillor Wilson moved that twelve barrels of tar be ordered for tarring and sanding the paths.-r-Seconded by Councillor McKay and carried. Councillor Darnill drew attention to the dangerous state of the cover over the well m Section 12, Block 15.—1 t was decided to ask Messrs R. Jamieson and Sons to repair it. Accounts amounting to £26 8/- were passed for payment.
