A SOUTHLAND VICTORY,

Having won the championship of the Dominion on the only two occasions on which they have competed at the annual tournament since the war, the Southland Ladies’ Hockey team has established a record of which the province should be proud, and its achievements cannot fail to attract attention to this part of the Dominion. Apart from the value of this sport as a means of encouraging outdoor exercise among girls and women, emphatic victories such as these, serve as effective propaganda, and are a means of advertisement. It is a fact, we understand, the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association has a record covering the last four years which is probably unsurpassed in the history of hockey, that of a provincial side having sustained only four or five defeats in something like forty games. The persistence with which the Southland team has asserted its superiority on the field, speaks eloquently of the calibre of the players and of the excellence of their team work, and it is desirable that the team’s meritorious efforts should be suitably recognised. We understand that the champions will arrive home on Saturday evening, and we hope that their welcome will be so charged with enthusiasm that the members of the team will have no doubt that their splendid achievements on the field are appreciated by the province they have represented in so distinguished a fashion.
