TRADE APPRENTICESHIP

AUCKLAND TRADES COMMITTEE. NO EMPLOYERS’ REPRESENTATIVE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 10. The fact that the Auckland employers of carpenters and joinfers have not appointed a representative on the apprenticeship Committee in buildings trades, resulted in an application being made to the Arbitration Court by Mr Bloodworth, for the Court to appoint a representative. It was stated that the bricklayers, plasterers and monumental masons had appointed representatives, and the appointment of the carpenters’ representative would complete the Committee. Mr Dickson, for the employers, agreed that it was in the interests of all parties to have representatives appointed. Mr Bloodworth said he had been in correspondence with the employers for the last nine months, and had notified them on August 22 of the position. His Honour: Well, to tell you the truth, I have not much sympathy for the employers. They were casual over the matter last time we were here. If they have come to their senses in a belated fashion, it is a matter for congratulation. Mr Dickson said the position was a new one, and that probably caused the delay. Mr Bloodworth said that his side of the Committee had met several times in the absence of the employers’ representative, and had framed certain recommendations. His Honour said that -the Court was quite satisfied that Mr Bloodworth had been trying to push the matter on. He indicated that it was not much use submitting fantastic suggestions. Mr Bloodworth: We don’t propose to come along with anything fantastic. His Honour: I might have been referring to the other side. He added the Court was not attempting anything involving too big a departure from the old award. The Court was feeling its way carefully for the present. The matter is to mentioned again on Monday, before which it is hoped that a conference between the parties will have been held.
