VICEREGAL. Their Excellencies the Governor-Genera! and Lady Jellicoe leave Wellington to-day on farewell visits to Wanganui and New Plymouth. They have accepted an invitation to attend the races at Wanganui, and on Friday His Excellency will open the new woollen mills at Aramoho. Their Excellencies have arranged to arrive at New Plymouth on Monday next, and to return to Wellington on September 18. Whilst at New Plymouth His Excellency will unveil the war memorial Cenotaph, and present his shooting trophy to the New Plymouth High School. Their Excellencies and their family expect to leave the Dominion for England by the Tahiti, sailing from Wellington on or about November 25, and propose to sail from Melbourne by the Mongolia on December 23. The Mayor of Bluff (Mr J. S. A. McDougall) has received intimation that His Excellency the Governor and Lady Jellicoe will visit Bluff on October 8 or 9. Mr G. W. Hazleton, postmaster at Gore, is at present on leave. Mr L. H. McCalman is acting-postmaster during his absence. Mr James Low has been appointed chairman of directors of the Otautau Dairy Factory Co. Mrs Anderson, wife of the Hon. G. J. Anderson, is lying ill in a private hospital in Dunedin. Mr Adam Hamilton left Invercargill by yesterday morning’s express on a brief visit to Wellington in connection with Meat Board matters. Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, M.P. for Awarua, returned north by yesterday morning’s through train to resume his Parliamentary duties at Wellington. Mr A. Glass has been appointed secretary of the Wright’s Bush Dairy Factory in succession to Mr H. Coster, who recently resigned. Mr and Mrs D. Cuthbertson leave by the afternoon express to-day en route to Sydney, where Mr Cuthbertson is to attend the Australasian Rotory Conference as the delegate of the local organisation. Mr George Kerr, who was on the staff of Messrs J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd., some years ago, and until recently was farming at Waimumu, has taken up residence at Gore and rejoined the staff of the same firm.

Mr F. J. R. Gledhill, of the Public Trust Office, Napier, has been appointed to fill the position at the Invercargill branch rendered vacant by the transfer of Mr Alex Bell. Mr Bell leaves Invercargill on September 26 to take up his new position at Napier.

Mr A. Walker, who has been resident Engineer in charge of the construction works for the Electric Power Board at Monowai, has been appointed Power House Superintendent at Monowai. Prior to taking up his new duties Mr Walker will spend some weeks at the Lake Coleridge station, and leaves for the north on Thursday. Mr J. T. F. Mitchell, manager of the Invercargill branch of Messrs Wright, Stephenson & Co., is to relinquish that position towards the end of the present year to take up the managership of the Auckland branch. The vacancy as manager at the Invercargill branch will be filled by the appointment of Mr John Macdonald, who has been connected with the firm in various capacities for the past 12 years and latterly has been in charge of the General Department. The death occurred at her residence, Balaclava street, Wyndham, yesterday afternoon, of Mrs E. G. Macpherson, alter a short illness. The late Mrs Macpherson, who was the wife of the well-known pro prietor of the Wyndham Farmer, was respected by a very large number of friends throughout the district, and by her death is removed one whose services the community will sadly miss. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon at the Wyndham cemetery. Mr Macpherson and a family of six —Misses Ruru and Roa (North Island), and Muo (Wyndham), and Messrs Jack (Dunedin), Douglas and Ronald (Wyndham) —remain to mourn their loss. Another of the pioneers of the Dominion passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Waikaka, on Monday night, in the person of Mr Wm. Pollock, at the advanced age of 83 years. The late Mr Pollock arrived in the colony with his young wife from Larnarkshire in May, 1863, and settled for a short time at Dunedin. He later took up carrying and waggoning work in the Dunback-Palmerston district. After a few years at this, he went farming near Palmerston South, and remained there until about 20 years ago, when he came south and took up a farm in the Greenvale district. Some years ago he retired from I the farm, and resided at Waikaka. About eight years ago his wife passed away, and he then lived with his son-in-law until his death. He leaves four sons and one daughter to mourn their loss, viz., Messrs David (Oamaru), William (Lake Coleridge), Robert (Addington), Gavin (Dunedin), and Mrs Keating (Waikaka). A large and representative gathering met in the Drill Hall, Riversdale, on Thursday evening to say farewell to Miss Mason, who has been on the staff of the local school for nearly two years. The social, which was arranged by the Hockey Club, of which Miss Mason was a prominent member, took the form of a dance. At an interval in the dancing, Mr Clarke, Chairman of the School Committee, in a few well-chosen words, referred to the esteem in which Miss Mason was held, and expressed regret at her transfer from Riversdale. Mr Caldwell (headmaster) also spoke on behalf of teachers and children, and mentioned the good work of Miss ■ Mason among the children. The eldest girl in the school then presented her with an ivoroid toilet set. Mr Caldwell, on behalf of the Hockey Club, presented Miss Mason with a gold-mounted fountain pen and a manicure set, and expressed the sorrow felt at the removal of such a valued member of the Club, who had represented her Club and district with such honour. Mr Milne spoke on behalf of the local residents. Miss Mason suitably replied, thanking all for the kindness she had met with at Riversdale. Miss Mason takes up her new position at Invercargill South School on Monday next.
