WATER MAIN BURSTS

BREAK IN NEW HUTT ROAD. Further evidence that the 24-in. water main from Wainui to Wellington is weakening was forced on householders on Tuesday morning, when the taps refused duty. The cause was a burst in the main just beyond Ngahuranga. The flow of water for a time turned the side of the Hutt Road into a brook, until the water was turned off. The burst presented a peculiar spectacle. A huge blister, a foot high in the middle, was raised in the bitumen surface of the new road, and from the central hole forced in the paving, and from the cracks extending from it there spouted a muddy fountain. About half a chain square of the surface will need replacing.
