POPULATION
LOSS BY EMIGRATION. SOUTH ISLAND DECREASE. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, July 31. The returns of population for the period ended June 30, issued this evening by the Statistician, indicate that the total increase in the Dominion for the ‘June quarter was 1973 (including Maoris), comprising a net gain of 4143 by natural increase and a loss of 2170 by migration, compared with the corresponding quarter of the preceding year.
The net gain from natural increase in 1924 was slightly lower, due to a failing off in the number of births. The net loss from migration was considerably lower than was experienced in the June quarter of 1923.
During the June quarter of 1924, the population (including Maoris) of the North Island increased by 3004, while that of the South Island suffered a decrease of 1301. The estimated population of New Zealand at June 30, was 660,248 males and 635,558 females, making a total of 1,295,806.
