THE LOAN PROPOSALS. MAYOR SPEAKS AT EAST INVERCARGILL. Between 30 and 40 people were present last evening when the Mayor (Mr Andrew Bain) addressed the citizens of East Invercargill in the Sylvan Bank Sunday School on the reading scheme proposed by the Council. Mr A. Anderson was voted to the chair, and briefly outlined the purpose of the meeting. In his speech, which was on the lines of his previous utterances on the subject, Mr Bain emphasised the benefits which would result from the scheme, and explained that it would not be the experiment that many people thought it would be. Asked if any portion of the loan monies was to be devoted to the reads in the suburbs, Mr Bain replied that although only certain named streets entered into the scheme at present, the outlying streets would benefit later by the use of the plant, which was to be purchased by the Borough. In answer to an inquiry as to the likelihood of the roads being laid down beyond the Borough boundaries, Mr Bain said that the Highways Board would take over roads like the East road in the future. A motion of thanks to the Mayor for his lucid explanation of the scheme was moved by the chairman, and seconded by Councillor J. Miller. In speaking to the motion, the chairman said he trusted that the Mayor’s action in holding that meeting would be taken as a precedent by future Mayors. _______________
