CRIME WAVE
CITIZENS ARMING. (By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, July 11. Melbourne appears at present to be on the crest of a crime wave. Apart from the .hold-ups reported recently, many minor robberies with violence have occurred. A number of houses and buildings have been broken into and ransacked. A number of citizens have taken the advice of the Chief Commissioner of Police and armed themselves with various kinds of weapons. The Chief Secretary does not approve of this advice. He favours tightening up the law so as to break organised gangs of criminals.
