FELL OVER PRECIPICE
DOCTOR’S PRECARIOUS POSITION. ATTEMPTS TO RESCUE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, July 10. (Received July 11, 2 a.m.) Dr Charles Varley, while mountaineering at Mount Buffalo, fell over a gorge. It is believed that he is lodged on a ledge 400 feet down, and 600 feet from the bottom of the gorge. Desperate efforts are being made to rescue him. One member of the rescue party was lowered on a rope 150 feet over the cliff but it was not long enough to reach the ledge where it is believed Dr Varley is lying. The weather is bitterly cold. Later. Dr Varley’s body was recovered late this afternoon.
