SOUTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION FORMED. (Per United Press Association.) TIMARU, July 9. At a meeting of delegates from ths School Committees Associations representing the South Island from Christchurch to Invercragil), it was decided to form a South Island Federated School Committees’ Association. Mr A. F. Boys (Ttmaru) was elected President. A proposal that sehoo! staffing be based on the average roll instead of the average attendance was discussed at some length and found general favour. It was decided that the Executive of the Association bring down a report upon it before making a request to the Department. ~ . . Mr J. Somerville (Dunedin) brought forward a detailed scheme by which he said the Department could supply uniform text books for schools at 40 per cent less than the present cost. A Committee was appointed to work out the complete details, after which the scheme will be submitted to the Department. The scheme found general favour l>ut some delegates considered that school books should be supplied by the Department free. It was decided to ask the Department to supply school committees with a general report on the work of teachers. A motion was passed disapproving of the proposal of the N2EJ. for local rating for extra incidentals. It was decided to recommend the Department to provide improved attendance certificates. . The visiting delegates were entertained at dinner, to-night and the Conference will resume to-morrow morning.
