An army of 13,000 Sao Paulo State forces and some Federal troops is marching towards Rio de Janeiro. News from Brazil is vague and leaves little doubt that the Sao Paulo insurrection is of a formidable character and aimed at the Federal Government. (Received July 9, 8.25 pan.) Some 250 persons were killed and 200 injured during the insurrection at Sao Paulo on Friday, according to information received here. Brazil was colonised by Portuguese in the early part of the sixteenth century, and in 1822 became an independent republic under Dom Pedro, son of the refugee King Joao VI, of Portugal. On November 15, 1889, Dom Pedro 11, second of the line, was dethroned, and a republic was proclaimed. The President and VicePresident are elected for four years. Congress consists of a Senate of sixty-three members and a Chamber of Deputies of 212 members. The present President is Dr Arthur Da Silva Bernardes. The language of the country is Portuguese.
