TAX ON LUXURIES
A JAPANESE PROPOSAL. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) TOKIO, July 7. The import duties on luxuries will be raised all round to 100 per cent, ad valorem under a Bill which has been introduced in the Diet. The purpose of the measure is to place an embargo on luxuries rather than to protect home industries. The list of dutiable articles includes tea and other beverages, liquors, precious stones, woollens, silks, knitted goods, wearing apparel, cameras, gramophones, toys and toilet goods.
