BOOTLEGGING PLOT
REMARKABLE revelations. OFFICIAL MOTOR UTILISED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright.) NEW YORK, July 8. (Received July 19, la.m.) A Philadelphia telegram says that investigations by General Butler, the antiSaloon crusader, have disclosed a beer smuggling plot, showing the remarkable resources of the bootleggers in enlisting the aid of a number of policemen, who used General Butler’s official motor-car to effect the removal of so-called high powered beer from a brewery. General Butlers bright red vehicle, bearing the municipal seal, had been regularly kept in a garage near the brewery, from which issued five giant motor trucks laden with beer. These proceeded down the main thoroughfare, ostensibly convoyed by General Butler’s automobile, in which sat a figure dressed to resemble the General. The trucks were escorted to the outskirts of the town, whence the policemen returned to the city. The plot was discovered through confessions following the apprehension of two trucks on a suburban highway.
