HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. Thfr monthly meeting of the High Schools’ Board was held yesterday afternoon when there were present: the Chairman (Mr J. T. Carswell); Mrs J. Hannan and Messrs J. Gilkison, R. M. Strang and F. G. Stevenson (secretary to the Board). A motion of condolence was passed to Mrs D. Stewart on the death of her husband. The Chairman referred in appreciative terms to the late Mr Stewart's services to the Board. It was moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Miss Mullay, of the teaching staff of the Girls’ High School, on the loss of her mother. LADY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The Lady Principal of the Giris’ High School (Miss Johnson), reported that the roll number was now 291. Messrs Parr and Kidsan, Secondary School Inspectors, visited the School on July 4 and 7, to recommend pupils for Senior Free Places. She suggested that as no Board funds could be spent on prizes, any donors of prizes should contribute to the prize fund, and any deficit be paid out of the general School fund. The prizes could then be ordered from a bookseller as soon as pos-sible-—a much more economical method of buying them than at the end of the year. The raising of £l3 by lunch-hour concerts was reported. This sum, together with a £1 for £1 subsidy by the Education Department, would augment the Picture Fund, which was started for the purpose of purchasing pictures for the class rooms. GENERAL. Various small requisitions were confirmed. The matter of purchasing a typewriter for the use of the Lady Principal of the Girls’ School was left in the hands of the secretary and Lady Principal. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Mullay and to Miss Samuel on sick leave. The question of School prizes came up for discussion upon the Rector reporting that he did not favour awarding them to his pupils. As the views of the Lady Principal on the matter w.ere at variance with his, it was decided that the two Principals confer. The Invercargill Football Club were granted the use of the High School gymnasium for training purposes on Wednesday nights on the usual conditions. The question of installing a vacuum cleaner in the new Boys’ High School came up for discussion, and it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr A. Bain, the Chairman and the architect to the Board for inquiry and report. The same Committee was deputed to report on various suggestions of improvements to the new School, made by the Rector. The architect’s report with reference to the installation of electric light, the erection of a stairway, etc., was referred to the Chairman and Mr Bain for consideration, with power to act. A letter was received from the Otago University acknowledging the Board’s letter nominating Mr J. G. Stephens as the Board’s representative on the University Council. A circular letter was received in regard to holding of an Education Court during the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, which is to be held in Dunedin about November 12, 1925. The Committee could give no particulars of the arrangements, but it was intended to hold demonstrations and lectures. It was left to the Principals of the two Schools to make any suggestions which could be used at the Exhibition. Messrs R. M. Strang and J. Gilkison were appointed the Visiting Committee for the mouth. It was decided that future meetings of the Board be held on the last Monday of the month at 7 o’clock in the evening.
