TOWN COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Invercargill Town Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening when there were present, the Mayor (Mr Andrew Bain) and Councillors A. J. Geddes, W. H. Boyes, C. J. Brodrick, C. J. Broad, H. J. Farrant, A. Glass, J. Miller, H. Ritchie, S. M. Macalister, R. P. Meek, L. Webb and E. Sheehan. Mr C. B. Rout advised the Council officially of the death of his late partner, Mr Stewart, and stated that he had arranged with Mr J. R. Sutton to undertake, in the meantime, any valuations and inspections required.—Referred to Finance Committee. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association advised that the Association was prepared to commence work on the subsidised scheme for the employment of soldiers at Sandy Point at any time suitable to the Council. The secretary further stated that the Association did not anticipate any great amount of unemployment among its members during the present winter months. —Referred to Public Works Committee for any necessary action. The secretary of the Invercargill Fire Board wrote, informing the Council that in regard to its request for the payment of £9OO for the use of the stand-by plant at the waterworks, the Board, after receiving legal opinion, had decided not to accept any liability for payment. —Referred to Finance Committee for attention.
