(By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, June 23. (Received June 23, 11.50 p.m.). The first Rugby League test, Australia v. England, was played in fine, dull weather in the presence of 60,000 people. The first half was very closely contested, the Australians fiercely forcing the game, which was not spectacular, and scoring the only try of the first half, the scores at halftime being England 4, Australia 3. England’s score consisted of two penalty goals. Play was so far disappointing, being very slow and much below international form, but Australia’s forwards were much superior to the visitors. The second half opened with Australia still attacking, but the visitors’ backs were too good, and before the finish England took the game into their own hands and outplayed the local men, who slowed down, and took command, crossing the line four times. The final scores were: England 22, Australia 3. The game was much faster in the second half, but was marked by rough play, in which the Australians were the principal offenders. SOCCER.
