FREEZING WORKS.

THE SEASON’S RETURNS. The outstanding feature of the returns showing the number of killings at the Makarewa, Mataura and Ocean Beach Freezing Works for the 1924 season, is the fact that there were approximately 49,000 fewer lambs killed than in the previous season. This is no doubt due to the greatly increased number of lambs being railed north, principally to Burnside, where, after killing, many Southland lambs leave the works branded “Prime Canterbury.” The difference in the price in favour of Canterbury lambs is more than sufficient to pay the cast of raffing Southland lambs to the northern works. It is estimated that approximately 80,000 head of Southland stock, principally lambs, were killed in northern works during the present season. The pasition ia regarded as a serious one for Southland and recently there has been a movement on foot to make it compulsory that carcases should be branded with the name of the province from which they come. The principal falling away in the killings of fat lambs occurred at the Mataura and Makurewa Works, the decreases being 22,190 and 25,501 respectively. Ocean Beach was not so seriously affected and the difference between the figures for 1923’and 1924 was something less than 1000. An increase in the number of sheep killed was shown in the Mataura and Ocean Beach Works. The season for both the Southland Frozen Meat Company’s Works was about a month shorter than last year, but only five days shorter in the case of the Ocean Beach Works. The position was undoubtedly to some extent affected by the railway strike and had it not been for the disorganisation of transport during that period, the returns for the season would probably have been much higher. The figures are as follow: MATAURA WORKS.
