MR W. STEVENSON’S LAND POLICY.
To the Editor. Sir, —As an old Southland farmer, I am very much disappointed with Mr Stevenson’s scheme on the land question. His theory’ (or visionary dream) is fallacious and impracticable, and would cause endless trouble and injustice throughout the Dominion. Indeed, Mr Stevenson’s cure would involve the country in disaster. I am told that Mr Stevenson is a practical farmer himself, and I am, therefore, the more astonished that he should evolve such absurd ideas on the valuation of land. He is evidently very much perturbed about the present state of the farming community, and predicts disaster if his “pet scheme” is not adopted. I venture to say that very few farmers in this country are of Mr Stevenson’s opinion. Fortunately they are more sanguine and optimistic than Mr Stevenson. He talks loudly of the necessity of getting together a “New Party” to save this country from ruin. If Mr Stevenson is the “Leader” of the “Young New Zealand Party” in Southland (if such a party exists, except on paper) he must produce a more nutritious pabulum to feed his followers (if he will ever have any) than columns of empty, high-sounding words. We are really getting tired of reading such words as: “Inflation,” “deflation,” “stabilisation.” and “potentialities,” as farmers are not accustomed to such erudite phraseology. Their vocabulary is generally confined to the dialect of the community.—l am, etc., FARMER HODGE. 20/6/24.
