EMPIRE PRESS

BETTER CABLE SERVICES. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 6. Lord Burnham presided at the first of a series of monthly Empire Press Union luncheons, arranged to enable overseas newspaper men to meet each other. He announced that the Union was presenting Mr Townend, the principal guest, with a portrait in oils, in commemoration of his 71 years of newspaper work. He added that the English newspapers would improve the service with the dominions if the cable companies, instead of conserving surpluses, reduced cable -costs. If competitive wireless was available, the service would be better still.

Sir Hugh R. Denison (Managing Director of Amalgamated Wireless, Australasia, Ltd.) and Sir Geo. Fenwick and a host of London editors were present. Speakers contended that the newspapers should devote greater space to overseas news in recognition of their increasing interest in London.
