(Received April 19, 1.10 a.m.) The opening day of the Australian Labouf Party’s annual conference was marked by lively proceedings. After the luncheon adjournment, a ccrtairi member approached the President with a view to moving that a larger hall be obtained for the conference. He agreed to this but when he took possession a crowd of several hundred outside demanded admission and forced its way in, flooded th# hall and took possession. Proceedings for a time were very rowdy till ample policemen were called and the hubbub ceased. Th# meeting then adjourned till a later hour. During the hubbub charges and counter charges were made. Mr Willis, the Chairman, said that he expected trouble, which he declared to be the outcome of an organised attempt to force his hands and disorganise ‘he conference. For a long time feeling had run high between the Communist and moderate section. The conference promises some stormy sessions.
