TE ANAU TO MANAPOURI
CONNECTING ROAD PROPOSED DISCUSSED BY SOUTHLAND LEAGUE. The building of a road linking up Te Anau and Manapouri was mentioned at the quarterly meeting of the Southland League at Winton yesterday by the chairman, Mr C. J. Brodrick, who said the Wallace engineer's estimate of the work was Continuing, he expressed the opinion 'that the estimate was a very high one, and a road suitable for motor traffic between the Lakes could be constructed for much less The Monowai trip was becoming very popular, and if a road were constructed to Te Anau many tourists would come, through Southland who now went back via Waimea to Dunedin. He did not think the Wallace County Council realised this, and thought they could assist the League more than at present. The trip from Te Anau to Manapouri was a delightful one and was better than the Wanganui with regard to scenery. There was an abundance of bird life while red deer were plentiful. “The League should keep the matter in sight,” he concluded, “and secure a big flow of traffic through Southland by linking up the two roads.” No definite action was taken.
