BRITAIN AND NEW ZEALAND. MR MASSEY’S COMPARISON. (Special to the Times). WELLINGTON, January 28. “The statements one hears that the cost of living is higher here than in Great Britain are ridiculous nonsense,” said Mr Massey in the course of his speech in reply to the civic welcome this afternoon. “In the ordinary necessaries of life,” said the Prime Minister, “such as meat, butter, bacon, honey, tea and sugar, many of which we pay heavy shipping charges over thousands of miles, the prices are very high at Home. There is no duty on sugar in New Zealand, unless it comes from a foreign country, and the duty then is so small as not to affect the price. There is a heavy duty on tea and sugar in England. They are double the price paid here. “We do not know how well off we really are here,” added the Prime Minister. <r While I have the utmost respect for the cradleland of the race, I must say we are ten times better off.”
