COLLAPSE OF A WALL
ACCIDENT AT SPECTATOR BUILDING. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 28. An extraordinary accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when the west wall of Tho Spectator building in Gloucester street collapsed with a roar into the adjoining empty section. The interior of the building was left bare, showing the passage on the ground floor and work room above. One man had a narrow escape from serious injury and was knocked down by flying bricks. Hon. G. W. Russell was in the upper room when the fall occurred but the floor did not collapse. The roof .is sagging bully and the condition of the building appears to lie precarious. The building is the property of the trustees of the estate of H L Ikiwker and is leased by G. W. Russell, Ltd. . u The cause of the collapse is thought to be the digging of a four-font trench which was three feet lower than the wall foundation. The empty section is being prepared for a four-storey building for the Builders’ Association.
