MILKING SHORTHORNS
THE MELBAS UNDER TEST. Although the performance of Melba XV stands out as one of the greatest records made by any cow of any breed, many efforts have been made to discount it as a freak performance. Steadily for years Mr Cole has raised the production cf this great line. Melba XV last year set the seal on Mr Cole’s work by producing 29,4321bs of milk and 1316.81bs of butter-fat in 365 days. Now, another member of the family has completed a second remarkable record. This was Melba 17th. During October she completed her 365 days’ test under the official Australian purebred dairy cattle production testing scheme, her test being carried out under the supervision of the dairy branch of the Department of Agriculture. She gave in the twelve months 29,2671bs milk, which on a 4 per cent, average test equalled 1173.781 b butterfat. Melba XV is on re-test again this year, and at latest advice she was doing even better than when tested two years ago. If she continues at the present rate she should set a new but-ter-fat record for all breeds the world over.
