VAGRANT VERSE
A MOTHER IN ISRAEL. (Written for the Southland Times). Content she lives within a narrow sphere That she a worthy wife and mother may Approve herself to spouse and children dear While travelling the onward upward way. She shuns the glare and glitter of the show That arrogates the name Society, # Yet queenliness is hers as all who know Her well will readily maintain with me. She queens it in a home where, ever sweet, The blest serenities of life abound, And graces spring, like roses, round her feet, And all that ministers true love is found. A noble wife thro’ long years of the past, A noble mother, fostering with care The pledges of affection, she has cast Her virtue round them as their native air, A mother in the cherished Israel Whereon her gracious influence is impressed, Her spouse, her children, loving praises swell, And know themselves in her for ever blest. —Robert Francia. Bluff, December 14. ‘
