SOME FIGHT

BULLDOG v. ELEPHANT. A 17-year-old elephant got the greatest surprise of his life at Lismore, N.S.W., recently. He was watching the calico walls of a circus tent being erected, and was perhaps soliliquising upon the days of his youth spent in the jungles of Africa, when his meditation was abruptly interrupted by a bulldog, who, no doubt, thinking Jumbo to be an outsize in dogs, determined to have a bit of him. The dog flew at the elephant’s throat, but missed. A second attempt ended in his burying his teeth on the under side of Jumbo’s trunk. Trumpeting with* anger the elephant caught the dog in its trunk and whirled him round and round, finally throwing him yards away and over the heads of a terrified group of circus helpers and town loungers. With the pluck of his breed, the dog returned to the attack. More infuriated than ever at the dog’s audacity, the elephant broke his chain, and endeavoured to finish his opponent by trampling on him. But Bully was agile, and for a time kept out of .the elephant’s way. At last Jumbo seized him and knelt on his back legs. Again the dog’s luck was in. A hollow in the ground saved him from injury if not from total extinction. By this time the dog was as mad as the elephant, and when he freed himself, threw out another challenge to his adversary. Circus attendants then thought it time to take a hand, and armed with sticks and iron bars stunned the dog and drove the elephant back to his peg, to which he was re-tethered .
