VAGRANT VERSE

ONE GLIMPSE, ONE WORD. (Written for the Southland Times). Even as a lightning flash you came And dazzled me erewhile; Your face was rose, your eyes were flam* And gracious was your smile. Swiftly you came, as swiftly went, Like spirit speeding on, But in that flash my peace was spent, My heart from me had gone. So tho’ the day be golden bright, The night bedecked with stars, Tho’ shines the moon in azure height Not faintest cloudlet Mars; Tho’ all be fair around, above, Tho’ many seek to cheer. I sigh for you, my vanished love t And long that you were near. I would you came again that I Your witching face might see, And hear your voice, ere low I lie Beneath the cypress tree. One glimpse! One word! No more I Content I shall abide, And dream within my grassy grave Of you, my spirit bride. —Robert Franoie Bluff, November 10.
