On account of the provisions of the Navigation Act the Moeraki, which leaves Melbourne on December 4 for Hobart and New Zealand, will not be allowed to bring passengers from Melbourne, although there is no passenger service in this trade and the Minister has discretionary power where a service between ports is inadequate. Strong indignation is ‘expressed locally, the Act being regarded as farce. (According to the Australian Act ships registered in other countries are not permitted to carry passengers between Australian ports.) • WRECK OF THE TREVESSA. LONDON, November 16. Foster, skipper of the Trevessa, gave evidence at the Board of Trade inquiry that the probable cause of the disaster was that in driving into the heavy seas the Trevessa hit a spar on heavy wreckage which caused a leak in No. 1 hold.
