A HUMAN OSTRICH
SOLDIER’S SOLID “MEAL.” EXTRAORDINARY ACT UNEXPLAINED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, November 17. (Received November 18, 5.5 p.m.) Private Hatch, aged 20 years, is lying seriously ill in Alexandra Hospital through having swallowed a dinner knife, tooth brush, sixteen trouser buttons, one string of several needles and some studs. When Hatch told his companions on Sunday that he had swallowed a knife they thought he was joking. As he persisted in the story he was taken to the hospital, after which a serious operation was performed, and the knife, tooth brush and trouser buttons extracted from his stomach. It is feared the needles and studs reached the intestines. The case is one of the most surprising ever treated. There is no apparent motive for his swallowing the articles.
