UNITED ACTION

STRENGTHENING SOUTHLAND'S POSITION. The question of united action on the part of the local bodies of Southland was brought up at the quarterly meeting of the Southland League which was held at Otautau yesterday. “Many requests are forwarded by local bodies to the Government,” said Mr R. M. Strang, “but not being endorsed by all local bodies they lack the -force which they would have if they were forwarded with the united backing of all local bodies.” He went on to say taat the chairman of the various local bodies throughout Southland should meet the local members before every session, and the needs of the province should be discussed at that conference, and forwarded to the Government for consideration. At present all the different bodies in Southland were pursuing their own way and they were suffering in consequence. All important matters that dealt with Southland, should be discussed by the local bodies in conference. They all knew the result of the big conference with regard to the Overseas Delegation, and similar conferences would have a very good effect on all questions concerning Southland. “By such a conference,” he concluded, “we would get the backing of Southland and the members would know exactly the feeling of the local bodies.” It was decided to support the suggestion.
