FIRE AT NORTH ROAD
A COTTAGE DAMAGED.
The Fire Brigade was called out at 2.15 o’clock this morning, to cope with an outbreak of fire in a four-roomed house on the North Road, near Fox street, occupied by Mr J. Thompson, a borough employee, and his wife and child. Mr Thompson said he went to bed at 9 o’clock on the previous night, when everything seemed all right. A little after 2 a.m. he was awakened by the reflection of fire on the wall and found the kitchen was on fire. He and his family left the house just as the fire burst through the wall from the kitchen. The brigade arrived very promptly and got the outbreak under control. The kitchen was completely gutted, but little damage was done to the front of the house. Mr Thompson has his effects insured for £l5O with the South British. The house itself is owned by Mr W. Peters, West Plains. The owner expressed gratitude for the brigade’s smart work, which undoubtedly prevented a serious outbreak.
