The Prince of Wales, presiding at a luncheon at the British National Film League, said it would be well worth Britain’s while to take the film industry seriously and develop it to the utmost. He emphasised the importance of the cinema in advancing Imperial interests and promoting Imperial interests and promoting Imperial trade, adding “trade follows the film.” The chairman (Colonel Bromhead), pointed out that the proportion of British films shown in the dominions was only two per cent, compared with 15 per cent, in the United Kingdom. The Empire could not afford to be absent from the world’s screens. Mr Massey, in a letter of apology, urged that the film could be employed to a greater degree in placing before the world the enormous resources of the Empire. In New Zealand there was a continually expressed desire for British films.
