TOWN BOARD

OTAUTAU. (From our own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Otautau Town Board was held on Monday evening with four members present. Leave of absence was granted Mr Wesney. A letter was received from the secretary of the Southland Power Board that its engineer did not favour linking up Otautau from Invercargill. The loss of energy in transmission would be too heavy, making the current expensive. The Monowai current would be available about February next. Other points raised by the Town Board regarding methods of buying current and installing of plant would be considered at the next Power Board meeting.—The letter was received, its consideration being held over pending further communication from the Power Board. Andrew Raines offered to rent the Town Board office now temporarily occupied by the Public Trust agent..--The Board agreed to this at a rental of 15/- per week. The Health Inspector, Mr Kerr, waited on the Board, and asked their support for suggested regulations to control eating I houses. The Board approved of the regula- j tions, fixing the license fee at £1 and trans- I fer at 5/-. A list of occupiers of land with gorse j encroaching on the street line was submitted j by the surfaceman. The clerk was instruct- ' cd to inform the occupiers to clear the gorse : back to the boundary within one month. . Failing this the work will be done by the Board at the occupiers’ expense. The Health Officer was empowered to 1 take necessary steps to have defective ' houses repaired or condemned. A. H. Summers asked that Frederick street, North Otautau, should be opened up, and the Works Committee was instructed to report. J. Maxwell also asked for some improvements to Nant.wich street, which the surfaceman was instructed to ! carry out. It was decided to carry out the tree- i planting on the higher land of the Recreai tion Reserve and to finish the area in the ' old cemetery. E. Fletcher Roberts submitted conditions upon which he would carry the engineering work in connection with the proposed street improvement scheme. On account of the small attendance, consideration of this was deferred until next meeting. Mrs King was granted a 10 years’ lease of the property now occupied by her at the rear of the Town Hall. The Clerk was instructed to arrange with the lamp lighter to include lamp in front of hall and bridge lamp in his rounds. Accounts amounting to £B4 17s 9d were passed for payment.
