Feeling reference to the services of the late Mr James McLean who bad carried out the duties of secretary and treasurer to the Waikiwi School Committee for about 30 years, was made by the chairman, Rev. W. J. Robertson at the annual meeting of householders last night. A motion of sympathy with the widow and family, all present standing, was carried.

Amongst the passengers who arrived at Wellington by the Manuka was the Bishop of Adelaide (Dr Thomas), who was accompanied by Mrs Thomas. This is their first visit to the Dominion, and his Lordship stated on his arrival that they were looking forward with pleasure th their three weeks’ holiday in New Zealand. They intend to spend the whole of the time in the North Island.

The Hon G. Fowlds, who Ims juM spent ten weeks at Papua as a deputation from the London Missionary Society, of which he is a member of the Australian Board, returned to New Zealand by the Manuka. Mr Fowlds, who went down to the Islands in the Missionary schooner John Williams, informed a Dominion reporter that he society was doing splendid work in the Islands amongst the natives. Mr J. Hargreaves, the leader of the English party at the Wallal eclipse expedition last September, is at present in Wellington completing his plans for observing the next solar eclipse on September 10 in Mexico. Mr Hargreaves is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and is the president of* the Chaldean Society, with headquarters in England. At Wallal he used the Cortie four-inch aperture 19-foot focal length camera that had been used at the English expedition to observe the 1919 solar eclipse at Sobral. Mr C. St. George, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, left yesterday on transfer to Ashburton. On Saturday evening he was bidden farewell at a social function given in his honour by the Pirates’ Football Club, which he captained last season. Mr C. W. Paton presided, and in making the presentation of a suit-case, said that he hoped that Mr St. George would not be overlooked by northern selectors. Mr P. Fraser said he expected Mr St. George to be wearing the fern-leaf when the next New Zealand team went to England. Several other speakers made complimentary reference to his good qualities as a player and a comrade. Mr St. George suitably rs sponded.
