SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODREU. The Hawke's Bay J.C.’s postponed meeting will be continued to-day. Wanganui J.C. Winter meeting entries are due at 8 o'clock this evening. P. T. Hogan turned out a winner and two seconds at Amberly meeting on Saturday. Hineamaru is now in the stable of the well-known Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones, who prepared Glentruin for Mr Chisholm. The Wingatui-trained General Average has been engaged in the leading jumping events of the Great Northern fixture. Three brood mares owned by Mr J. B. Reid were shipped to England last week for the stud recently established at Newmarket by that studmaster. The first and second horses in the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke's Bay meeting on Saturday, viz., Kilris and All Gohl, both by Kilroy, are owned by Mr W. R. KembalL Kao Tane, winner of the Autumn Handicap at Hastings on Saturday, is a three-year-old filly by Gay Lad from Dabchick, by Formosan —Aqualin, by Perkin Warbeck ll—Aqualate, by July. The City and Surburban runner-up in England last week, Roman Fiddle, has three relations in Australia and New Zealand; Violoncello (well-known in Sydney) Quinoiogist (an English winner in Australiaand Day Comet ( now at the stud in Auckland). The former is a brother to Roman Fiddle, while Quinologist and Day Comet are half-brothers. Correspondent, winner of the Hawke’? Bay Cup, £5OO (14 miles), is a five-year-old geloing by Gazeley—Communique, by Finland—War Talk, by Martian—Gossip, by Wallace. He is owned by the wellknown Gisborne trainer, H. Kilkey, than whom there is no better mentor in the North Island when it comes to preparing a thoroughbred for a lengthy flat or jumping race. The Cup hero has been a useful performer for his owner during the current season. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. ALTO CHIMES WINS LEADING EVENT. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 28. The Auckland Trotting Club’s Autumn meeting concluded in fine weather. There I was a very large attendance. The track was in good order. Despite the fact that inclement weather i sused a postponement, the Auckland Trot- : ting Club’s Autumn fixture was very successful, with a large attendance and good racing, while the financial result must have j been quite satisfactory. The totalisator re- I turns for the two days amounted to £lOl,- ' 000, as compared with £91.097 10s last year, an increase of £9,902 10s for the meeting. • This was a good finish to the gathering, as ■ there was a drop fo £5,120 10s on the first ! day. There was a big field for the Barn Handi- ■ cap (harness', £250, unhoppled trotters, class 3.55 (l|m.), but the winner, Lady! Irvine, by Sir William—lrvington mare, is not a champion, although she improved her mark by three seconds.

Again a strong field contested the Manuka Handicap (harness), £250, class 3.38 dim.) and victory rested with the Aus-tralian-bred mare Mulwaree, by Honest Huon—Grace, who is owned and trained in Auckland. The winner competed from the same mark as Florrie Bingen (Nelson Bingen—Harold Dillon mare) and did well to beat that smart pacer. The time was not out of the. way and demonstrated the fact that the track was on the slow side.

The principal handicap event of the day, Prince of Wales Handicap (harness), £lOOO, class 4.36 (2m.) was won by an Australianbred horse, but on this occasion the successful pacer figured in the name of a New Zealander, as Alto Chimes, by Abbey Bells —Rose Alto, is trained in Christchurch by J. Bryce for Mr J. R. Corrigan, M.P., of Taranaki. The aged winner, who was ’ purchased in the Commonwealth some time , back, has been somewhat slow in coming • to profit and had not to travel at his best : gait to get the money. The runner-up, i Sheik, is a Sydney horse in P .Riddle’s j Auckland stable, while Lady Joan, who gain- ! ed third berth and £lOO, is prepared by F. j Holmes for Mr W. J. Morland, of FendalI ton, Christchurch. The daughter of Nelson Bingen has been threatening to accomplish . big things for some time past, but she is i inclined to be somewhat flighty, although . she is gradually settling down to business.

Pyramus. who accounted for the Autumn Handicap (harness), £3OO, unhoppled trotters, class 4.54 (2m.) has become a favourite square-gaited performer in Auckland, as she is trained and driven by A. Julian, who at one time was the idol of the northern public when riding in steeplechases and hurdle races. She is an Australian-bred mare by Peri Huon from a Black Wilkes marc, and thus recorded her second success of the fixture. Her nearest attendant at the finish, Buz Buz, is a useful aged mare of Charming Bells.

An appropriate winner turned up in the 1 Adams Memorial Handicap (harness), £4OO, ■ and a gold cup valued at 100 guineas, class | 3.33 (14m.), as the first horse home, Anselm, by Nut Ansel (imp.), is owned by J. i Teddy junr.. who imported Nut Ansel to ; Maoriland from California some years prior ito the Great War. It is hardly necessary’ J to say that the win was a popular one, as Mr Teddy has been racing for a very long time in the far north. The runner-up, Rockaway, is raced by Mr J. Conway, who came to New Zealand from America some years ago, bringing with him the stallion van Coronado (sire of Rockaway) and the speedy mare Lovelock. Third money went to the Southland-bred Red Star, by Harold Rothschild—Red Diamond, who won his first race at Gore in the colours of Mr J. J. Green, and was afterwards taken to Auckland by Mr A. Brown. The pacer produced at Messrs Stevenson and McMath’s Willowbank Stud, at Riversdale. has performed well since he was transported to his present home.

It was a good performance on the part of the South Islander Lady Joan, by Nelson Bingen—Belette, to score in 2.50 3-5 on a slow track in the Liverpool Handicap (harness'. £4OO, class 2.52 (lim.), as Mr Morland’s roan mare was chased home by the crack performers, viz., First Carbine and Snowshoe. The last-named put up a great race and his defeat would probably prove an expensive one to his connections. Lady Jcvi is widely engaged at the forthcoming FoJbury Park T.C. Winter fixture.

My Junior, who won the Members’ Handicap (harness), £4OO, for trotters only, class 4.50 (2m.), is a smart gelding by Wildwood Junr. from Nyosotis, by Huon (imp.) Georgina, by Lincoln Yet. He had his work cut out to catch the judge’s eye, as Sebiska, who was only a neck away, is a smart trotter by Harold Dillon —Alice Wood. Bluewood, who was close up third, is also a trotting son of Wildwood Junr. The Farewell Handicap (saddle), £3OO, class 2.22 (Im.) resulted in a great finish, in which Mr Hill’s Blair Audubon narrowly snatched victory from Rockaway. The successful miler is a four-year-old descendant of Great Audubon and Sylvie, by Franz— D.I.C. As Great Audubon is an imported son of Peter the Great, and Sylvie ranks as a half-sister to Admiral Wood. Peter Mac, Papanaui, etc., it is only to be expected that Blair Audubon should pace fast and improve his time on a slow track. It appears that Happy Voyage only paced an exhibition mile, as the track was on the slow side for record-breaking, and, under these circumstances, no official time was taken of his effort to interest the public. AMBERLEY RACING CLUB. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE AT RICCARTON (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. The Amberley R.C’s. annual fixture was held to-day on the Riccarton course. The weather affected the attendance, and the course was heavy. The sum of £20,398 was passed through the machine, as compared i with £7,465 last year, when the mt eting ; was held at Amberley. Results:— OPEN HURDLES (once round and a distance). —Mandrake 9.9, 1; Trevella 9.0, 2, Here We Are 10.12, 3. Also ran—Red Gown 10.13, Clean Sweep 10.12, Meteorite 9.11, Roniform 9.8, Master Hand 9.0. CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. There was a good finish for the Open Hurdle Race, Mr J. P. Quill’s Mandrake scoring by a narrow 7 margin from the promising novice Trevella (Masterpiece—Sobersides). The winning son of Hymettus— Mandola is trained by P. T. Hogan, at Umaru, and he has not been returned a winner since 1921, when he scored at the North Otago J.C. Summer gathering in December, although he has been placed often enough. Hogan fancied his pupil and supported him accordingly, heartened by a marked triumph at Timaru, when the stable went for a big w 7 in on Guncase, and the .

Calibre gelding duly landed the goods at round about a limit price. It is the best coup pulled off by the Washdyke trainer for a long time past.

A useful field contested the Novice Stakes, but R. Ellis and Stark's very promising two-year-old filly, Finora, won comfortably from Red Wink. The winner’s success w 7 as overdue, owing to the smart form she had displayed when racing with others of her ow 7 n age. By Finland from Trebelli, she is a full sister to Will Oakland, and is partly owned by the trainer of the latter. Ped Wink, w 7 ho filled second place, is a tnree-year-old gelding, of whom more may be heard in the days to come. He races in the interest of Messrs Clarkson and Pearsun, and is trained by the latter. Shin soreness has troubled him of late, otherwise the descendant of Winkie and Ada Merling, by Martian—Leonore, by Seaton Delaval. Oricot, another three-year-old, is a sturdy gelding, who is by Husbandman —Gowrie Lass, and is trained for Mr H. A. Kni'ght by F. D. Jones. Oricot gallops well and was headed off by two smart opponents.

The result of the Kowai Trot (harness), £llO, class 3.57 (Im. and 5f.), was of interest to Southlanders, as Mr R. M. Morten’s three-year-old filly, Pakoti, who won, is a daughter of the Mataura stallion, Four Chimes, from Bright Alice. She is prepared with Mr Morten’s other horses by J. Bryce. Pakoti had to move along to keep out of the way of the ex-Southlander, Eric Hbthschild, by Harold Rothschild—Eva. who was giving the winner 96yds. The Lumsden-bred gelding has been racing consistently for some time and has paced solidly on grass or clay tracks as required.

Urgency was a strong public favourite for the Amberley Cup, Some Kid, Clean Sweep (who also ran in the hurdle race earlier in the afternoon) and Cerberus being next in demand. Urgency was soon seen out in front, and, racing along the back, he had a useful lead from Frisco’ Mail and Clean Sweep. Maintaining his advantage all round the top turn, Urgency landed into the home straight six lengths clear of Frisco’ Mail and Cerberus. In the run home L’rgency drew 7 still further away and won in hollow style by seven lengths from Frisco’ Mail, while three lengths back came Some Kid, followed by Gamecock. Mr H. A. Knight’s four-year-old gelding, Urgency, who is an inmate of the training establishn ent of F. D. Jones, was got by Clarenceux (imp.) from Madrid, by Vasco— Flame. With a double cross of Musket close up on his dam’s side, it is not surprising that the Cup winner stays fairly well. Frisco’ Mail, who ran second, is prepared by P. T. Hogan, and reads as a son qiSan Francisco from Lady Victoria (dam ofilfat good horse Royal Star).

In the Hack Handicap (7f.) the winner, Moorland, came from R. Emerson’s stable. The son of Finland—d’Oro is owned by Mr G. L. Rutherford and promises to develop into a useful performer. P. T. Hogan was again unlucky, as he ran second with his own gelding, Osterman, who has an unlucky knacK of just getting into the money.

In the Open Welter, Ardour, Prosperity, Mythology and Grim Joke were the best supported. Fabrinade jumped out smartly and led along the back from Grim Joke and Prosperity, who were joined by Brackenfield and Ardour after going two furlongs. There was little change in the order till they reached the straight, where Samum (H. Marshall) and Barmaid moved up. Samum (Benzonian—Khansin) headed Fabrinade one hundred yards from home and won by a length, Fabrinade beating Barmaid by a neck. Samum, who used to race in Southland, is now trained at Riccarton by T. H. Cillett for Mr J. Rogers. He has been racing well at minor fixtures here during the present season.

Will Oakland (G. Young) was the popular pick for the Wattle Handicap, The Reaver and Sunny Loch being next in demand. Will Oakland and The Reaver made all the running, with Sunny Loch third. One hundred yards from home Sunny Loch moved up, and, in a great finish, Will Oaklend won by a short head from Sunny Loch, who was a similar distance in front o. The Reaver, Brackenfield was fourth. The Riccarton trainer, R. Ellis, who used to train and race in Otago and Southland at one time, thus pulled off a nice little double during the afternoon with the full brother and sister —Finora and Will Oakfind.

The Teviotdale Trot (harness), class smin (2m.) attracted a strong field and produced a fair race, Transport and Quiver, the tw* limit horses carrying numbers one and two saddle-cloths respectively, pacing first and second, with the backmarker, Prince Burlington, in third berth. The winner, Mr Dane’s b g Transport, is a four-year-old by Logan Pointer —Santee Rosa, and it will be of interest to southerners to know that he is trained by G. Reed, well-known at Wingatui and Mosgiel as a capable man with gallopers and trotters. The second horse, Quiver, is a four-year-old gelding by V’Udwood Junr—Ladychild. CANTERBURY TURF NEWS. THESPIAN’S SYDNEY SPRING VISIT DENIED. (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. Mr G. D. Greenwood is reducing his team, presumably to make room for the youngsters. Pluto, Vespucci, Cupidon, Tre.:sayr, Farceur, Parody and Heathcote arc to be sold. A special train has been arranged for May 3 to Dunedin, carrying horses engaged at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Winter n eeting. Arrangements are being made by the Committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club with the owner of the recently imported American trotting stallion, The Triumph, for the horse to attack the mile trotting record at the southern Club’s meeting next week. The Triumph has an American record of 2min B{sec, accomplished on a half-mile track. Unfortunately, in bJ- first start in the Dominion, which was at the Nev; Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, he met with interference and was not seen at his best. The horse has come to form very quickly since his arrival, and it is hoped he will be seen at Forbury Park, where his presence will be an increased attraction to the n.eeting. Mr George Currie, of Wanganui, states the report that Thespian would be taken to Australia for the Spring meetings is incorrect. If the son of Absurd is taken over to the other side at all, it will not be until the Autumn. To have the horse ready to ir.ee st Randwick in the Spring would mean that he would have to be taken over in June at the latest. EGMONT WINTER MEETING. HANDICAPS FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 9. ATHLETICS BRITISH TEAM IN AMERICA. WIN’S THE MILE RELAY. NEW YORK, April 28. At Philadelphia England’s colours were lowered in the first event of the University of Pennsylvania relay carnival, when Morgan of the Oxford team finished a bad sixth in a two-mile international run which Columbia won. Morgan started well and led the field for nearly half the distance but he gradually dropped back. Oxford won the mile relay, Stevenson finishing seven yards ahead. The British representatives led at 660 yards, but yielded it at 880, after which Milligan, Oxford, (captain), began reducing the Georgetown team’s lead. Milligan leaped ahead in the last hundred yards, gaining a seven yards’ lead which Stevenson maintained to the last. SCULLING HANNAN AND FELTON. LATTER LOSES ON FOUL. (Per United Press Association). NELSON, April 28. The sculling race between Felton and Hannan for the Australasian championship was rowed this afternoon on Nelson harbour in perfect weather. There was not a ripple on the water. The distance was three miles. Felton passed the finishing poet about three feet in front, but Hannan claimed a foul and got the verdict. Felton, rowing a slower but stronger stroke than his opponent, assumed the lead after the first two hundred yards and led all the way. He started with 31 strokes to the minute against Hannan's 34 and at the end of the first mile was rowing 23 to his opponent’s 25. At the end of a mile and a half Felton crossed into Hannan’s water and the latter signalled for a foul but continued the race. Both men kept close together. There was never more than a length and a half between them and at* the two mile post both were doing about the same number of strokes to the minute. In the last mile Hannan gradually made up the leeway, rowing a quicker stroke and. appearing the fresher man. Within twenty yards of the finish he made a great effort and got within a few feet of Felton when the post was reached. Felton, who rowed against medical advice, finished very tired but Hannan was quite fresh again when he reached his quarters. Speaking to a press representative after the race Felton said that no doubt there was a foul, but he would soorfer not discuss it. The time was 23.57. The race was rowed against a slight current.
