ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES
FOOTBALLER INJURED. G. Blanks, the promising Pirate forward, sustained a compound fracture of the thigh on Saturday evening about 7 o’clock. He was going home on a motorcycle after the football match in Invercargill. He was riding along the stretch of road between Wallacetown and Winton, keeping well to the left side of the road when a car approached with bright headlights. Blanks slewed still further to the side of the road but the car struck his cycle and he was thrown heavily. The unknown motorist passed on. Blanks was found some time later by a resident of the district, who obtained a conveyance and the injured man was taken to the Southland Hospital where he is progressing as well as can be expected. KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAM. AUCKLAND, April 28. An elderly woman, Mary Stanley, was knocked down by a tramcar at Epsom. Swift application of the brakes saved her life. She was removed to the Hospital semi-conscious, and her condition is still serious.
