TOWN COUNCIL

COMMITTEE REPORTS. The following reports from the Committees will be presented at the next meeting of the Borough Council. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reports:—Having instructed the Borough solicitor to take the necessary steps to obtain an Order-in-Council, authorising the construction of a bridge over the Oreti river, in accordance with the plans and specifications prepared by the Town Engineer, and also to have the matter of fixing contributions towards the cost of the work by the Southland County Council, considered by the Commissioner. With reference to the matter of perpetuating the memory of the late John Feldwick, recommend that a memorial gate be erected at the South entrance of the Victoria Park. GAS, WATER AND TRAMS. The Gas, Water and Tramways Committee reports:—With reference to the Borough Electrical Engineer's report (April 23), recommend that a concrete mixer be purchased by the Electricty Department. Having considered a letter from the Southland Motor Association (April 17) and arranged to have all the tram poles in Tweed street painted white at the base. Having considered a letter from the Southland Motor Association requesting that the head lights on the one-man cars be dimmed, and recommend they be informed that the lights are in accordance with the Order-in-Council and that the Council has no power to make any alteration. With reference to the tenders for the (Gasworks) lathe, having accepted an increased tender by the Southland Times Co., Ltd., of £62 10, being the highest. With reference to the Gas Manager’s report, 23-4-23, having appointed F. Anderson to the position of gas fitter at award rates. PUBLIC WORKS. The Public Works Committee reports:—W T ith reference to the matter of widening St. Andrew street, recommend in terms of the Town Engineer’s report that Mr Springford’s offer to sell 2ft of land on the north boundary of his section be accepted on the terms set forth in the correspondence. With reference to the Town Engineer’s report, 23-4-23, recommend that the small crusher at the quarry he erected at the new public works yard, for the purpose of crushing gravel and large broken stone estimated to cost £2OO (inclusive of motor). The committee also reported that it has instructed the Borough solicitor to prepare a by-law dealing with the following matters:—(a) Examination and licensing of drivers of private motor-cars; (b) The registration or licensing of private motor cars; (c) Heavy traffic.
