NARROW WIN FOR SOUTHLAND] The final match for the Calder Shield was played at Gore on Saturday between the Southland and Gore Presbyterian Bible Classes. In the first round Gore defeated Otago by 14 to 6 and as the Eastern District team had six senior grad*,.players including an Eastern District representative it was expected that Southland would lose possession of the Shield. However, after an exciting game the visitors ran out winners by 9 points to 7. Immediately from the kick off the home side rushed play into the Southland 25, their heavy forward pack overwhelming their lighter opponents. After a score had been narrowly averted, Matheson fielded a miskick by a Southland back and potted a fine goal from outside his own 25. Rallying from their sudden reverse Southland put more "sting into their play and from a scrum in the home 25, Neave sent his backs away. Pretty passing between G. Cleland, Gardiner and Raines and back to Gardiner resulted in the latter scoring an unconverted try on rhe corner. Good iorward play by Wailace, H. McCorkindale and B. Gray put Gore in an attacking position again anti although A. Cleland and Balch temporarily checked their attack'with a good break-away rush, Gore were not to be denied and from a scramble on the Southland line T. Gray dived over for a tty. The kick failed. Half time sounded shortly after with the score 7 to 3 in Eastern’s favour. Right from the start of the second sjrell play see sawed up and down the ground, Eastern having the (best of the exchanges. Then Southland rushed play to within the home 25 where they secured a free kick, G. Cleland kicking a good goal. Shortly after the kick off, G. Cleland charged down a kick by the Gore full back and dribbled the ball across the line and touched down, but a five yards' scrum was ordered. With only seven minutes to go and the score 7 to 6, play became very exciting. Finally, from a line-out, G. Cleland secured the ball and ran clean through the the opposition, finally side-

stepping the full-back to score a beautiful try under the posts. The scorer failed to goal. With only a few minutes to go, Gore made a desperate attempt to score, but the Southlanders were successful in staving off their attacks, Southland thus winning by 9 points to 7. Mr Dunn refereed the game. In the evening, the visitors were entertained by their rivals at tea and the Shield was presented to G. Cleland, the captain of the winning team The winning team was as follows: Backs: Cheyne; Anderson, Raines, Calder; G. Cleland, Gardiner; Neave; Forwards: A. Cleland, Knuckey; - Jones. Balch, Arkin; Wilson, Cox, Kerse. CRICKET. Wairongoa played a friendly match with Old Boys. The latter batted first, knocking up 69 runs. Eunson made 25, Dingwall 15 and Kerr 10. The best bowling figures for Wairongoa’ were secured by Padget, four for 13 and McCallum three for 23. In reply Wairongoa made 71 runs thus winning by two runs after an exciting finish. For Old Boys, Bell took four for 21, Gordon two for 7 and Dingwall two for 10.
