SPORTING

(BY JOLLY BEGGAR) Oamaru races to-day. Acceptances for first day of D.J.C. Spring meeting close on Monday. Local trainers have made good use of the training tracks on the S.R.Cs. course during the past week. In the Pink and Silver Peak leave for Wingatui to-day. Both are very well, especially the former, who is sure to race prominently next week. The prolonged spell of fine weather has assisted the local trainers to get their charges into racing condition in view of engagements this mouth. Caretaker Mar■hail opened the course proper for those horses going to Dunedin next week, and his action enabled some fast be acrompbshed. There is a thick sole of grass on the track, which will benefit from the galloping that took place during the past few days. The Southland-owned, imported mare Glentruin must be in good heart judging from the fact that she easily defeated her ■table-mate Prosperity in a gallop over six furlongs on the Rkvarton track one day last week. A report stares that Songbird is to have a change of stables. The Kilbroney—Grey Linnet horse will enter S. Trilford’s establishment at Riccarton. As usual trainers A. McLellan and A. Mathieson have large teams of trotters in work, and both mentors are very busy men these days. The pacing circuits are in very fine order and the light harness brigade have been given faster tasks than usual for this time of the year in Southland. The ex-Southland colt, Dalnahine is putting in good work at Addington. Last year the son of Brent Locanda—Pleasant Drive showed plenty of speed on the track, under the guidance of owner-trainer. J. J. McMath. who has three Our Thorpe three-year-olds in work for the Juvenile Stakes at Gore on Boxing Day. Jockey 0. Rask has had his license can. celled by the Licensing Committee of the N.Z. Racing Conference. Jada, the winner of the Trial Plate at Kurow is owned by the local sportsman, Mr R. B. Stiven. The full sistetr of Kilowen returned her connections a substantial dividend. Gloaming has now won nearly £32,000 in stakes, thus beating Carbine’s total of £29,626 by over £2OOO. The record winnings for Australasia is held by Eurythmic with the magnificent total of £33,566. Looking over a list of notable winners I noticed Sister Olive, last year s Melbourne Cup winner has the splendid total of £lO. 841 set opposite her name for two wins. Not a bad sum for any owner to receive for two winning brackets! The New Zealand Press Association’s Sydney representative is being subjected to the severest criticism by the sporting writers of the Dominion for his presumption in declaring that Wood out-generalled Young in the Spring Stakes. There is every reason to belie' e (writes the sporting editor of rhe Christchurch Press t that the cable agent in Sydney sent to New' Zealand what was the general opinion of the racing experts on the Sydney Press, so that the stand taken by the local scribes who known nothing more than they have been told by the cable is all the more remarkable. Wood was riding good winners in Australia when Young was struggling with the letters of the alphabet in the little school at Fordell, so that there is little disgrace in the imputation that Young was out-ridden by Wood. According to New Zealand standards Young is a very fair horseman and one of undoubted promise, and when engaged by R. J. Mason to do Mr Greenwood’s riding, he was probably the best of his weight available in the Dominion. He is au alert and energetic horseman, but as yet lacks polish and finish, qualities the absence of which possibly earned him the unfavourable criticism on Saturday last. It would certainly seem more fitting if New Zealand comment had been deferred until seme of the numerous New Zealand sportsmen who witnessed the race returned to the Dominion, for their opinions should carry some weight, and incidentally amongst them is one of the leading sporting writers of the Dominion. The Oamaru reinsman, J. McLennan, steered the winners of both trots at the Kurow fixtures. Basker Boy is a one. Last year he wound up his short two-year-old career with a win, while th-s year the Markhope— Princess Hosea geiau.g has registered two wins for his first two starts, and looks a likely winner to-day at Oamaru. The racing seems to have improved Twinkle and the North Otago Cup may come his way this afternoon, although the top-weight, Com Rigs, will be hard to dispose of, when the business end of the race is reached. After his fine display at Geraldine. Silent King will have many admirers for the above event. Kerb, Bosker Boy and Warhaven are the , three at the top of the handicap in the I Aldersyde Handicap, and the only other one that may trouble them is Happy Warrior, if started in this event. With all his big weight Sunny Loch pleases most in the Belfield Welter, although both Sembric and Mirza can run a good seven furlongs when in the mood. Quarrelsome reads well in the Grange Handicap, but he will have to give a better display than at Kurow or Geraldine to keep in front of Jackaroo and Bosker Boy, if the latter is kept for this event. For the Flying Handicap, there will be good support for Roseday, but Sunny Loch has the benefit of recent racing to commend him to backers. With her light impost, Mantua is sure to run well as she has been finishing strongly in her races at recent meetings. The Gore Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme for its Boxing Day meeting. The sum of £2OOO in stakes will be distributed as follows: Novice Handicap of £l6O. Class 3.50. One mile and a half ; Croydon Handicap (saddle) of £165. For unhoppled trotters. Class 3.55. One mile and a-half; Gore Trotting Club Handicap (harness) of £5OO. Class 4.50. DECREASE LN NUMBERS. A GOOD REPRESENTATION (Special t,p the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, October 6. Although the nominations received by the Canterbury Jockey Club for the principal events at the Metropolitan meeting show a falling off in numbers, there is certainly no depreciation in quality, for all the leading performers in the Dominion have had engagements made for them. The lists are very representative with the exception . of the Far North, which is only to be expected considering that the Auckland Racing Club’s Spring meeting clashes with the New Zealand Cup fixtures. The Canterbury Cup and the G.G. Stead Memorial Gold Cup entries are specially noteworthy, and despite the almost certainty of finding Gloaming in the latter event 21 other horses have been accorded nomination, including Rapine, Ging’s Trumpeter, Amythas, Winning Hit, The Hawk, and Maioha. The total entries for the nine events amount to 336, compared with 381 last year. comparison of the respective races is as follows, last year’s figures being in parenthesis:—Stewards’ Handicap 40 (47) ; Criterion Handicap 50 (38) ; Metropolitan Handicap 33 ( 37); Canterbury Cup 18 (23); Jockey Club Handicap 51 (57); Members’ Handicap 53 (55) ; G. G. Stead Memorial Gold Cup 22 (31); Juvenile Plate 22 (34); and Fendalton Handicap 47 (59). AUSTRALIAN RACING GLOAMING AND BEAUFORD (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z.
