BOWLING.

(By “Measure”). All the local bowling clubs will officially open their greens on Saturday next and the prospects for a good season are bright. The greens are all in fine order and arc probably better than they have been for some years. Both the Te Rangi and Invercargill greens, which were, not altogether satisfactory in 1920 and 1921, appear to have completely recovered and have fine even playing surfaces. The .Southland green is also at its best and the Northenders claim that their green is just as good as ever. This is saying a lot, as the Nort-hend area for some seasons past has ranked as one of the finest in the Dominion. Bowlers generally are kedn to don their uniforms again and have been visiting the greens fairly regularly of late. Some of the older enthusiasts of the Invercargill Club have been trying their skill on a patch of lawn, along the banko of the green and after three or four weeks’ practice, at this, have become as expert as if they \verc playing on the real “dinkum” green. “Measure” has to acknowledge an invitation from the Southland and Invercargill Clubs to be present on their opening day, and doubtless invitations will also come along from the other clubs. The only difficulty is that all the clubs open on the one afternoon and it will take some manoeuvring to get around the lot. “Bill’’ Bremner, who has scored a long list of successes in championship and tournament games in Southland and who has on several occasions got into the prize-money at the Dominion tournament, is leaving for Auckland and will not play for his old club this season. The Invercargill Chib will miss him as he was the Club’s strongest player and in other ways had done a great deal to bring rhe Club into prominence. One of the Auckland clubs will probably reap the benefit as he is too keen a bowler to leave the game for a good many years to come.. The Edendale Club opens its season on Wednesda;/ next and members are looking forward to a successful season. The green is in good order and Mr G. C. Stephen, contractor, is proceeding with the erection of the pavilion, which, it is anticipated, will be completed for the opening day. The Balchitha C-lub’s prospects for the season are very bright. The membership has already reached record figures, reaching to within a few of the ccntuiy, so a boom season in bowling should be experienced in South Otago. The club’s opening date has not been definitely fixed. The Kaitangata Club’s green was opened for the season on Saturday last in beautiful weal her and in the presence of a large muster of bowlers and their lady friends. The green played well, and Ihe devotees of "kitty” thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon's roll-up. Lady bowlers arc steadily increasing in number in the Dunedin Centre, and in.the various clubs in which they have been admitted to membership they have certainly proved a decided asset. The matter of admitting lady members was discussed at a recent meeting of directors of the Caversham Club, and the proposal was very favourably received. A general meeting of members will probably oe convened shortly after the club’s opening date, when the matter will be finally decided by the members as a whole. Following are the proposed fixtures for ihe Western District Clubs for the coming season, to be submitted to the clubs interested for approval:—Nov. 22—Riverton v. Otautau; Aparima v. Nightcaps.
