SOLDIER SETTLERS
COMPOSITION OF BOARD OF INQUIRY. SUGGESTED ORDER. OF REFERENCE. Dre latest advice received by the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association respecting the Board of Inquiry which the Minister of Lands is constituting to inquire into the position of soldier settlers is that boards will be set up consisting of two practical farmers in each land district. The New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association has suggested to the Minister that all the gentlemen on the boards should meet in Wellington to discuss general principles, basis of values, and the order of reference before visiting the settlements in their various districts. The Re-turned Soldiers’ Association has suggested the following order of reference : (a) Revaluation of soldiers’ holdings where necessary on the basis determined upon by the meeting of the joint committee of the various boards of inquiry. (b) Advisability of (1) re.fnission of present arrears in rent and (2) advancing further working capital. (c) Suitability of area. It has also been suggested to the Minister that all the members of the boards of inquiry should assemble in Wellington after their investigations to complete a general report on soldier settlement for presentation to the Minister.
