PUBLIC WORKS

STATEMENT DUE IN A FORTNIGHT (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, October 5. ‘When will the Public Works estimate reach the House?” asked Mr R. Masters (Stratford), who mentioned that phenomenally fine weather was being experienced and the local bodies would like to proceed with works. The Hon. J. G. Coates replied that the estimates could be ready in a few days, but the date of their presentation to the House was a matter for the Prime Minister. Mr Massey: In about a fortnight. Mr Coates added that the local bodies this year had been very reasonable in their applications. That might be because under the new arrangements they had discussed works with the local engineers of the Department. There had been very little duplication. He could say that in cases where urgent work required to be done, such as the provision of access to farms, he could authorise some expenidture in anticipation of Parliamentary approval, but that was not done as a general rule.
