UNDERWRITERS LETTER
RECEIVED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL The Invercargill Borough Council received from Mr W. XL Britton last night a copy uf the letter published in the Times of September 27, and held a brief discussion uprfJWhe matter generally. Councillor T. D. Lennie suggested that it be referred to Committee, which was eventually done. *Mr Jennie al*o asked whether it had not been intended to hold another conference when the official letter was received. The Mayor: This was not the letter awaited. Councillor S. M. Macalister said that if a Fire Board were established and the insurance companies had not to pay a proportion of the cost, then they should have no representatives on the Board. If thev had representation, their delegates would have no interest in any limitation whatever of the expenditure, and would In* free to ask for things involving a very heavy expenditure. He mentioned also the question of premium increases. The Mayor: There may be a limit to the increase of premiums. Councillor Macalister said there might be a practical lupjt. It seemed to him that the insurance companies were going right behind the Act. The discussion then lapsed.
