OTAUTAU. A most successful plain and fancy dress ball for young people was held in the Otautau Town Hall on Friday night, as a wind up for the season of Mre Ireland’s dancing clas. The hall was tastefully decorated, and there was a large attendance. the many and varied fancy’ dresses presenting a gay appearance. The grand march was led off by Miss M. Laing and Mr W. Ireland. Mr Jellyman provided the music, and Mrs Ireland and Mr W. Burnett, acted as Ms.C. The following were some of the principal costumes. Mrs Ireland, Belgian girl; Nurse Taylor, Turkish lady; Miss Morgan, Spanish girl; Miss Sheedy, Russian peasant; Mies G. Baird, pictures; Miss B. Baird, flowers; Mies Smellie, bluebell; Miss M. Laing, butterfly; Miss N. Renowden, early Victorian lady; Miss M. Renowden, red rose; Miss Palmer, pirate; Miss W- Arthur, pierette; Mi- J. Pulley, guardsman; Mr W. Ireland, cowboy ;Mr A. Ferguson, golliwog; Mr T. Clark, pierrott. The prizes for the best costume were awarded by popular vote, and were’ won by Miss N. Renowden, as early Victorian lady, and Mr Archie Ferguson, as golliwog. BLUFF. The popularity of ..the Bluff Wateraide Workers’ annual social and euchre tournament was instanced on Monday evening when about 190 couples, including officers and members of the crew of the vessels in port, attended at the Drill Hall, which was gaily decorated for the occasion with greenery’, flowers bunting and coloured electric lights. Throughout the proceedings it was evident that the capable secretary, Mr D. Miller, and his energetic staff had acted up to instructions to spare no expense, and the streamer, baloon and confetti, effects, introinto some of the dances, were very’ pretty. Messrs A. Giles and W. McDonald officiated as Ms.C., the music being provided by Grant’s orchestra and the supper by Mr P. Denton. Concertina selections by Mr Bart-noo, of the John Craig, and a song by E. Budd, were well received as also were the Sailor’s hornpipe and Irish Jig, danced by Miss Habberfieid, of Greenhills. The euchre tournament, which was controlled by Messrs G. Long and C. Rose, attracted 120 competitors and resulted as follows: Ladies —Mrs G. Preston 1, Mrs J. McCarthy’ 2, Mrs G. Streatfield 3, Mrs J. Nixey 4, Mrs Donne 5; gentlemen—J. Shiete 1, Joe Bradshaw 2, M. Cross 3, R. Taylor (s.s. Whangape) 4, W. Butler 5.
