WORK AND WAGES.
THE BASIC WAGE. NEW SOUTH WALES DECISION. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. ■—-Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) SYDNEY, May 18. The Cabinet decided that the regulations gazetting the new wages were insufficient, and I ac cordingly decided to approach the Arbitration Court for an award of £3 18/-. Owing to the Federal Arbitration award bringing wages of builders’ labourers within seven shillings of carpenters, the master builders "have decided to dispense with the former and employ carpenters, excepting in the case of pick and shovel men. (Received May 18, 10.45 p.m.) The Industrial Court declined to grant the application of the master bakers for a reduction of bread-carters’ wages in consequence of the recent Board of Trade declaration on the basic wage, and referred the matter to the Full Court for argument on t£ie point submitted by the union’s representative, that the Board, could only make one declaration yearly and that therefore the last declaration was ultra vires and could not be enforced.
