The recommendation was adopted. The chairman said that personally he was of the opinion that a coach should be obtained for the representative fifteen, if not for the senior clubs. So far as the schools were concerned he had spoken to many of the school teachers, and they were in favour of the appointment of last year’s coach, Mr E. Booth for the schools and country football He would be available for any of the senior teams if they applied for him, He understood that Mr Booth was available, and they should do something at once. BOXING BENEFIT TO-NIGHT. . Quite a number of tickets have been sold for the benefit boxing and vaudeville entertainment to be held in the Municipal Theatre to-night. Cox,” was a well-known and popular figure in boxing circles, met with a tragic death some months ago. The object is one deserving of the support of all sports, followers of the boxing game and otherwise, and, apart from the sentimental reasons for attendance, readers will see by a glance at the advertised programme that their money will bring them a handsome return in the way of entertainment. A very large and enthusiastic meeting was held last evening in Mr Gilfedder’s Rooms, Tay Street, when it was decided to form a Society to be called “The Southland Athletic and Championship Society,” which is to be registered with headquarters in Invercargill. It is proposed to hold a large sports meeting during the Christmas holidays so as not to clash with other sports meetings. A scheme has been devised to raise £BOO to be allotted to successful competitors. The object? of the society are to promote and encourage athletic sports and step-dancing by granting large prize-money and working on improved methods. It is also the intention of the society to use the metrical measure for all running events. This system will give competitors an opportunity of breaking records and also of calculating their chances in big events. The distances will be similar to those at the international Olympic Games. The newly-formed society will be cosmopolitan and in no way partisan. There will be no multiplicity of events for any one class of distance, so that the long distance, middle distance and speed races will carry equal prize-money. A revised scheme for the dancing events was held in abeyance. Sawing, chopping and bicycle events will be promoted, special provision will be made for children’s events. The final programme of the sports with names of competitors and handicaps will be published at least two weeks before the sports meeting. The society anticipate large entries from all over the dominion, and given fine weather the public will be treated to a good day’s enjoyment.
